It all started when…

In the summer of 2018, long-time disability rights advocate and author Jen Powley assembled a group of journalists, occupational therapists, lawyers, professors, researchers, and friends to bring attention to the extremely limited and insufficient housing options and supports available for people with severe physical disabilities in Nova Scotia.

Estimates suggest that almost 840 people with severe physical disabilities between the ages of 18 and 60 are currently being housed in large congregate care facilities like nursing homes. These care facilities are often outside of community and predominantly house elderly people, many of whom are suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia. Next to no small-housing homes are available for people with severe physical disabilities in Nova Scotia. In-home funding support only covers 7-hours per day of care.

At present, over 1,000 people with disabilities are waitlisted for housing in Nova Scotia.

As Jen herself is now waitlisted for a nursing home, she founded No More Warehousing: The The Nova Scotia Association for Inclusive Homes and Support. The mission of No More Warehousing is to fight against the institutionalization of people with physical disabilities in places like nursing homes, and to advocate for smaller, co-housing units within the community, and adequate in-home support services.
